This page highlights some of the causes and projects I actively support or contribute to. While this may not be of interest to everyone, it reflects areas I care about and where I’ve tried to make a positive impact. I share this information for those who are curious or might be inspired to get involved themselves.
Environmental Conservation
Project AWARE – PADI Scuba Diving Initiatives
As a certified PADI Scuba Instructor, I support Project AWARE, a global movement focused on ocean conservation and marine protection through diving-related initiatives.
OnderwaterinLeiden.nl (2021 – Present)
I volunteer with this local environmental project by helping remove plastic waste from canals and waterways in Leiden. If you’re interested, they welcome donations through their website.
Privacy & Digital Rights
AVGcheck (2021 – Present)
For Stichting Lucifer I contribute by adding tracker flag metadata and writing technical descriptions for this tool that helps users test websites for stealth tracking and consent violations.
WordPress Plugin Development (2021 – Present)
Developed and maintain a custom WordPress plugin for Stichting Lucifer that blocks the automatic loading of YouTube videos to ensure users give explicit consent before third-party media is loaded.
Facebook Leak Check Nederland (2021 – Present)
Assisted with backend development of the lookup tool in collaboration with Stichting Lucifer to support Dutch users affected by a major Facebook data leak.
Privacy4All (2011 – Present)
Serve as a backup system administrator for this privacy-focused hosting initiative. I also rely on them to host my personal email in a secure and private environment.
Open Source & Ethical Tech
Stichting Lucifer (Board Member, 2013 – Present)
Serve as a board member in this nonprofit foundation promoting free access to knowledge, privacy, digital rights, and open-source tools.
Stichting Humanity4all (Board Member, 2012 – Present)
Serve as a board member in this nonprofit foundation promoting human and digital rights, and usage of open-source tools.
Kopimi.nl / Cutme, Pasteme, Kopimi! (2012 – Present)
Active contributor and OP to Kopimi.nl , supporting alternative file sharing and information freedom.
WordPress Plugin Development (2007 – Present)
Develop and maintain specialized WordPress plugins. Like for example for the former iMumble project used for management of Mumble servers across multiple server instances, used for decentralized and private voice communication.
Social Justice & First Aid
Human Rights Activism (2011 – 2014)
Participated in various human rights initiatives, including advice with organizing protests and serving as a street medic, primarily in The Hague.
Emergency First Response (2011 – Present)
Maintain regular First Aid certification and contribute as a street medic, completing at least one workshop per year to stay current.
General Volunteering & Contributions
Code for Good (2007 – Present)
Whenever time and energy allow (and there’s enough coffee), I contribute code to nonprofit and ethical tech projects.
